The HFH U7's played host to West Bank Bears in an eagerly fought local derby. Both teams started the game strongly and run the ball with great purpose; however it was West Bank who crossed first. To both teams credit there was some excellent covering defence that stopped several try scoring opportunities. At half time HFH U7's went in 03 - 05 down. Three great tries through some strong runs and excellent footwork from Aiden Doolan, Adam Jack and Liam Bibby, with the latter putting the ball down six inches short of the line which would of made the score even closer on the stroke of half time! Some strong runs from Dylan Simm, Connah O'Neill, Evan Kilgannon and Lewis Black set up good field position for the scores. The second half was an even closer affair with the teams trading tries and equally strong defence, keeping each other at bay. Firstly Henry Rimmer, who ran strong all day, burst through the middle setting up good field position. He was well supported by Liam Flanagan, Joe Davies, Daniel Snone and Matthew Dodd on his debut. This laid a platform for Katie Mottershead to go flying in for a try at the corner and Aiden Doolan once more. James Barrowcliffe was next over for his first try in rugby league. On the last set of six Aiden Doolan went in for a well deserved hat trick with another strong run.As in the previous week it was another big step forward for the team with a much improved performance in attack. Against some big west bank players there was also some very strong defence. Improving the Hornets defence in the coming weeks will result in the HFH U7’s becoming even more competitive.Well done everyone for a very good performance by all.

This week the HFH U7's travelled to Ryland’s for what turned out to be a tightly contested game. The Hornets started off like a house on fire, keeping Ryland’s out for the first three sets of six and scoring the first try of the game through a strong run from Aiden Doolan. The platform was set by some solid tackling from Katie Mottershead, Dylan Simm, Evan Kilgannon and Daniel Shone. As the half progressed, HFH U7's seemed to switch off allowing Ryland’s back into the game. They scored three unanswered tries down the wings from a couple of very fast players to lead 03 - 01 at half time. The Hornets re-grouped at half time and started off very brightly, with some really strong runs by Henry Rimmer, Lewis Black, Liam Flanagan and James Barrowcliff who set up some good field position. Once again this led to Aiden Doolan crossing the line. The game was end to end with Ryland’s again scoring some good tries on the outside. But The Hornets kept running strongly with Connah O'Neil and Liam Bibby, using their trademark hand-off. Aiden Doolan, for the second week running completed his hat trick with one of his strong runs through the heart of the opposition defence. The game finished with Ryland’s claiming the last two tries. Hopefully not sounding to bias, the score seemed to flatter Ryland’s as this was a very close game for long spells and a much improved defensive display from the Hornets players.

HFH U7's played host to Wigan St Pats this week in another keenly contested match. The game started off with the Hornets on the back foot through a quick score from St Pats, although they defended their line strongly, they conceded on the last tackle. This kicked the Hornets into action as they responded immediately with a great try from Aiden Doolan, who must of ran through 6 or 7 would be tacklers. Both teams attacking play come to the fore with St Pats running strongly and offloading the ball, which caught the Hornets out on a couple of occasions. The game was end to end and some barn storming runs from Henry Rimmer, Connah O'Neill, James barrowcliff and Daniel Shone setting up Liam Bibby for a strong weaving run to the corner, again beating several defenders. At half time the hornets went in 02 - 03 down after a really competitive first half. The second half started with the Hornets in possession first and as usual Lewis Black, Liam Flanagan and Katie Mottershead all ran strong and straight. Despite their size they never took a backward step. On this set the HFH U7’s were tackled just short. From the turnover, St Pats broke away and extended their lead. To the Hornets credit the players all stuck to the task in defence, with Adam Jack leading the way with some crunching tackles, He was ably supported by Dylan Simm, Evan Kilgannon, Joe Davis and Matthew Dodd. The HFH U7’s continued to run strong with Liam Bibby going over for his second try of the match. For the third game in a row, Aiden Doolan scored a well earned hat trick. The game finished with the HFH U7’s on the book foot and conceding a couple of tries. A final score of 05 - 09 to St Pats didn't give a true reflection of how close the game was. This surprised all who watched the game who thought the score was a lot closer then this!Well done everyone for another brave and impressive performance. Lets keep working hard and enjoying ourselves in training as you are all improving every week.

The HFH U7's played host to Chorley Panthers in what turned out to be the most keenly fought out game of the season. Hornets started with the ball but a knock on, on the 2nd tackle put Chorley straight on the attack and resulted in them scoring the first try of the game. The Hornets still seemed rusty after the long winter break but on their next set they scored their first try through debutante Charlie Glover. Both teams showed some really strong defence and on occasions were forcing each other backwards through good line speed and some ferocious tackling. There wasn't much between the sides and after some really strong direct runs from Evan Kilgannon, Dylan Simm, Adam Jack and Lewis Black who was unlucky not to score his first try, falling just a yard short of the line, set up good field position for Liam Bibby to score in the corner. In the last set of the half Charlie Glover again showed great speed and strength to beat several defenders on a long run to the try line leaving the Hornets trailing 03 - 04 at half time. The second half started at the same fast pace as the first, this time Hornets defence kept Chorley out with Connah O'Neill leading the way, well supported by Henry Rimmer, Daniel Shone and Matthew Dodd all producing good strong tackles. This laid the platform for Aiden Doolan to scoot over to level the scores at 04 - 04. Liam Bibby and Aiden Doolan both scored very similar tries, stepping through tackles and outpacing the defence to score. Winning 06 – 05, you couldn't get a more tense finish. The Hornets kept Chorley out with some really strong defence on their line only to concede a dubious try on the last tackle to level the scores at 06 - 06. Hornets had the ball for the last set of the game only to drop it and invite Chorley back onto the attack, but all credit the much improved defence of the Hornets was strong enough to keep Chorley out and finish the game a draw. This was by far the best defensive display of the season as all the players showed real determination and strength to keep the opposition out, who had a lot more ball due to Hornets handling errors. The work in training is really paying off with everyone making good progress. Let’s keep it up and get that first win next week.

The HFH U7's made the journey to Leigh Miners Rangers this week in what turned out to be the best defensive display of the season to date. The game started with Hornets in possession and despite some strong runs they were kept out by some excellent defence from Leigh, this was carried on throughout by both teams. Hornets carried on where they left off last week with some outstanding tackling, everybody was playing their part and getting really stuck in and looked as though they were really enjoying the hard work.
The hard work paid off as Hornets continually held Leigh out to force the turnover, giving good field position which led to the first try from Aiden Doolan who once again showed great strength and pace to beat defenders and go in at the corner. The Hornets now had their tails up and some surging runs from Henry Rimmer, Evan Kilgannon, Lewis Black and Dylan Simm set up Charlie Glover to burst through and score. On the next set Aiden Doolan scooted over close to the line for his second try. The half finished with Leigh breaking Hornets defence to leave the scores 01 - 03 at half time. The second half started with defences on top from both teams. The Hornets looked strong with Connah O'Neill, Liam Flanagan, Liam Bibby and Daniel Shone all working hard to keep the Leigh team out. Several times Leigh looked to break free but time and time again the Hornets were there in numbers to keep them out. Charlie Glover, Adam Jack, Liam Bibby and Connah O'Neill in particular making some last ditch tackles. The Hornets hard work was rewarded when Adam Jack scored the fourth try to lead 01 - 04. Leigh battled hard and scored near the end to leave the final score 02 - 04 and the Hornets celebrated their first win. The win has been coming after a few near misses and all the hard work and hopefully new found confidence in defence will mean this is the first of many! Well done to all the team you really deserve a lot of credit, so let’s keep working hard now and build on this and keep enjoying it.

Sunday 10th April 2011

This week the HFH U7’s travelled to Ryland’s for a tough local derby on a hot spring day. The Hornets started with the ball and good progress down field resulted in Adam Jack powering through for the first try. Ryland’s now had the ball and scored early in the set to level. But as in previous weeks the Hornets are now made of sterner tough and Henry Rimmer stormed over for the next score. The Hornets improvement in defence was shining through as James Barrowcliff, Matthew Dodd, Liam Bibby and Henry Rimmer kept Rylands out with some strong tackling. The Hornets capitalised on this as Aiden Doolan and Liam Bibby both scored great tries showing good pace and awareness to evade several tacklers on the way to the line. A big strong Ryland’s team kept pressing and grabbed another try to keep the pressure on. With the half drawing to a close the ever improving Daniel Shone stepped through several tacklers to finish the half with Hornets leading 04 - 05. The second half started with Ryland’s in possession but the ever growing confidence of the Hornets in defence kept them out. Aiden Doolan scoring on the next set, again finishing off a great attacking set, with Katie Mottershead, Evan Kilgannon, Liam Flanagan and Connaugh O'Neill setting up good field position. Ryland’s kept running strong and kept themselves in the game but once again the new found confidence in the Hornets shone through as Daniel Shone stepped through and outpaced the defence for a great long range try. With another win in sight the Hornets tackled fearlessly and kept themselves in front with some great cover tackles, really getting stuck in as a team. Aiden Doolan was over for another hat trick to complete the scoring and a great team effort from the Hornets. This week again showed how committed the whole team are in defence and how hard they are working for each other in a great team performance. When these teams last met, Ryland’s ran out 03 - 07 victors so a great turn around in performance and a massive effort in training resulted in the Hornets winning 06 - 08. Keep up the good work everyone and more results will follow.
